Creating a Seat at the Table (2018)Adapting to a new culture is a big challenge for international students. While making domestic friends could help the adaptation process a lot, what we often see in college is segregation between domestic and international students. To mitigate the problem, we decided to focus on first-year students who are likely to be the most open-minded and dining courts where most first-year students have a meal every day.
Therefore, we designed a new feature for Purdue Menus app that matches students with others to have a meal at dining courts together. Users are paired with a group after they select which dining court and when they are eating, what size of the group they prefer, and what kinds of topics they would like to discuss with a new group. Through a heuristic evaluation, we were able to fix some usability issues. Through a concept validation testing, we confirmed that both domestic and international students are very interested in such feature and willing to try using it. Grocery Bingo (2018)In this project, we aimed to investigate ways to leverage positive aspects of grocery shopping of families with young children by having children make contributions to grocery shopping. Through interviews with five participants and a series of observations in grocery stores, we came up with a grocery bingo game as one of the possible ways to engage children better in the process of grocery shopping.
Users can start a game by creating their bingo while the number of items per each category (e.g., vegetables, meat, dairy, etc.) that can be selected reflect the food-pyramid. When grocery shopping, users need to find and scan items in the bingo to complete the game. Through concept validation testings, most of our parent participants said they would enjoy using this while they are grocery shopping with their kids. Through usability testings, we were able to figure out some usability issues and fix them as well. Lyft Rating System Redesign (2018)This project is aimed at mitigating the well-known limitations of the rating system of Lyft. Through a contextual inquiry with five participants, we found the problem of the current rating system, where it encourages users to rank their driver using only very good or very bad rankings without understanding what they are rating for. Therefore, the current system does not reflect honest opinions of users.
To mitigate the problem, our redesigned rating system replaced the five-star scale with a binary emoticon system for three specific categories such as professionalism, car quality, and comfort level. Through the usability testing, our team found out that users feel emoticons express their opinions better than a five-star scale and a binary rating system is enough rather than a five-star scale. With the final design, we conducted a concept validation testing and confirmed that users feel much more clear about what they are rating for with the new rating system. Fitness Tracker App Redesign (2018)This project is aimed at fostering motivation for exercises. Our approach is to enhance one's intrinsic motivation for physical activities by giving them real-time evaluative feedback and insights on how they are doing and how they have improved.
Through concept validation testings, we confirmed that users find both the current status and the progress very helpful and motivating. Baseball in One (2016)A UX Design Project for developing an application that provides a customized baseball broadcasting application with baseball fans.
